Sally Kirby15+ Year Pismo Beach Local

Travel writer and Pismo Beach local expert. Sally has lived in Pismo Beach for over 15 years, personally visiting and reviewing every spot featured on this site. Her recommendations come from real meals, real stays, and real conversations with the locals who make this community run.

Pismo Beach is one of the better California beach towns for a trip with a dog. The wide sandy beach, the pier promenade, Dinosaur Caves Park, and Pismo Preserve all welcome leashed dogs. And unlike many coastal California towns, Pismo has multiple solid hotel options that genuinely accommodate pets rather than just tolerating them.

I have traveled through this area with dogs for years and know which hotels make it easy and which make it a headache. The five below are the ones I would actually recommend. Always confirm the current pet fee and any size restrictions directly with the hotel before booking, since these change seasonally.

SeaCrest OceanFront Hotel

Pismo Beach · $$
Best Overall

My top recommendation for travelers with dogs. SeaCrest sits directly on the beach in Pismo Beach proper, which means you can walk your dog on the sand steps from your room. With over 4,000 reviews, a heated pool, and a central location near downtown restaurants, it delivers excellent value without compromise. Pet-friendly throughout most of the property. Confirm the current pet fee when booking.

Beach Dogs

If your dog lives for the beach, Sandcastle is the pick. Rooms here open almost directly onto the sand, about as beachfront as it gets in Pismo Beach. The property is well-maintained, pet-friendly across most room types, and a short walk from downtown dining. Families with dogs do particularly well here because the wide, flat beach in front of the hotel is excellent for an off-leash-style run at low tide. Keep your dog on leash as required by local rules.

Pismo Lighthouse Suites

Pismo Beach · $$
Families with Pets

Pismo Lighthouse Suites is a smart pick for families traveling with pets because the all-suite format gives everyone, dog included, more room to spread out. Over 2,800 reviews, a heated pool, spa tub, and a solid location close to the pier make it one of the better mid-range options. The suites mean your dog does not have to share a single hotel room with a family of four. Pet-friendly throughout. Confirm the current policy on fees and size limits.

Oxford Suites Pismo Beach

Pismo Beach · $$
Budget Pet Travelers

Oxford Suites is the best budget-friendly pet-friendly option in Pismo Beach. The free hot breakfast alone saves $15 to $25 per person per morning, which adds up quickly over a multi-night stay. The all-suite setup gives you more space, and the heated pool is well-maintained. Oxford Suites may have weight restrictions for larger dogs, so call ahead if you are traveling with a large breed.

Spyglass Inn

Shell Beach · $$
Quiet Escape with Pets

Spyglass Inn in Shell Beach is the right pick if you want ocean views, a pet-friendly policy, and a quieter atmosphere away from the downtown Pismo Beach crowds. The bluff location in Shell Beach gives the property dramatic Pacific views without the summer congestion of the pier area. Budget-friendly pricing, a heated pool, and easy walking access to Dinosaur Caves Park make it a solid choice for travelers with dogs who prefer a low-key base.

Sally's 7 Tips for Bringing Your Dog to Pismo Beach

  1. 1. Call ahead on pet fees. Pet fees change frequently and are rarely listed accurately on third-party booking sites. Call the hotel directly the week before your trip to confirm the current fee, size limits, and which rooms are pet-designated.
  2. 2. Book a ground floor room if you can. Carrying a large dog up multiple flights of stairs in a hotel with no elevator gets old fast. Ask for a ground floor pet room when booking, especially at older properties.
  3. 3. Arrive before sunset for the beach walk. The pier promenade at golden hour with a dog is one of the best experiences in Pismo Beach. Fewer crowds, great light, and dogs are welcome on a leash the full length of the pier.
  4. 4. Pack a collapsible bowl and fresh water. The beach and pier area in summer can be hot and there are limited water sources. A collapsible bowl and a water bottle for your dog save trips back to the hotel.
  5. 5. Try Woolly's for a pet-friendly lunch. Woolly's Beach Bar and Grill right at the pier has the best pet-friendly outdoor patio in downtown Pismo Beach. Your dog sits with you, the fish tacos are excellent, and the pier view is hard to beat.
  6. 6. Visit Dinosaur Caves Park in Shell Beach. This coastal bluff park is an easy drive from downtown and has great walking paths along the cliff edge. Dogs on leash are welcome and the views are spectacular without the downtown crowds.
  7. 7. Check the tide chart before heading to the beach. Low tide at Pismo State Beach exposes a wide, firm sand flat that is ideal for running with your dog. High tide pushes everything to a narrow strip near the dunes. A quick tide check saves a disappointing trip.
