The Cliffs Resort is the best hotel in the Pismo Beach area, and it is not particularly close. No other property in a 10-mile radius combines a dramatic oceanfront bluff setting, a full spa, fine dining with Pacific views, and the kind of resort polish that makes a special occasion feel like one. If you are celebrating something, or you simply want the best possible version of a Central Coast stay, The Cliffs is where you book.

The resort sits in Shell Beach, a quiet residential community about 3 miles south of downtown Pismo Beach. That distance from the pier gives it something most Pismo hotels lack: genuine seclusion and quiet. You are on a bluff above the Pacific with unobstructed ocean views in every direction, but the noise and foot traffic of downtown are far enough away that the resort has a peaceful atmosphere that mid-range Pismo hotels cannot replicate.

The Setting and Rooms

The bluff location is the resort's defining feature. The property sits directly above the Pacific, and because Shell Beach has dramatic rocky coastline rather than flat sandy beach, the views from the rooms are expansive and unobstructed. Ocean-facing rooms look straight out to the horizon. This is a different visual experience than you get from Pismo Beach hotels at sand level, and it is one of the main reasons people choose The Cliffs over closer alternatives.

Rooms are well-appointed and regularly updated. The resort has gone through several renovation cycles and the quality shows. Expect larger rooms than you find at most Pismo Beach properties, with proper closet space, good bathrooms, and thoughtful touches throughout. The ocean-facing rooms are worth the premium. You are staying at a luxury resort for the views and the atmosphere, and the ocean-facing rooms deliver both.

The Spa

The spa is one of the two things that sets The Cliffs Resort apart from every other hotel near Pismo Beach. Full spa facilities are rare in this market. Dolphin Bay Resort has a spa as well, but The Cliffs is the more established option with a longer track record. The spa offers the full range: massages, facials, body wraps, and salon services. If a spa day is part of the plan, this is the only real option in the area.

I recommend booking spa treatments in advance, especially for summer and holiday weekends. The spa is popular with both resort guests and day visitors from the area, and prime treatment times on Saturday afternoons sell out weeks ahead. Book early or ask about early morning availability if weekends fill up.

The Restaurant: The Lido

The Lido is the resort's ocean view restaurant, serving California coastal cuisine for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The dining room faces the Pacific and the views are exceptional, particularly at sunset. For a special occasion dinner with a view, The Lido competes directly with Ventana Grill downtown. The menus are different, Ventana Grill leans Latin-American with a lively atmosphere, while The Lido is more classic California fine dining in a quieter setting. Both are excellent choices.

Breakfast at The Lido is one of the better hotel breakfast experiences in the area. Sitting down to a proper breakfast with Pacific views on a clear Central Coast morning is one of those Pismo Beach moments that stays with you. If you are a guest at the resort, do not skip it.

The Pool and Grounds

The heated outdoor pool and hot tub are positioned on the bluff with ocean views. The pool area is well-maintained and the grounds around it are landscaped for privacy and comfort. Unlike the pool at Shore Cliff Hotel which is more exposed to Price Street, The Cliffs pool feels genuinely secluded. On a warm Central Coast afternoon, it is an excellent place to spend a few hours.

The resort grounds overall are impeccably kept. The mature landscaping, bluff-edge pathways, and ocean-facing terraces give The Cliffs a resort feel that you do not get at hotels that are simply near the beach. This is a place designed around the experience of being above the ocean, and the grounds reflect that intention throughout.

Sally's Tips for Staying at The Cliffs Resort

• ●Book an ocean-facing room. The views are the central experience of staying here, and standard rooms away from the water miss the point.

• ●Drive into downtown Pismo Beach for lunch or casual meals. The pier area has excellent options at lower prices than resort dining.
• ●The Shell Beach location is quieter than hotels near the pier. If you want the nightlife and walking access to downtown, choose a hotel on Price Street instead.
• ●Off-season rates from November through March can be significantly lower. The views and spa are just as good in winter.
• ●Ask about packages. The resort regularly offers spa and dining packages that bundle treatments and meals at a discount.
