Spa & Wellness in Pismo Beach at a Glance
Pismo Beach is not a spa destination in the same way that Palm Springs or Napa Valley is, but the area has genuinely good wellness options if you know where to look. The two best full-service resort spas are both in Shell Beach, about 3 miles south of downtown. The most unique experience on the entire Central Coast is Avila Hot Springs, a natural mineral hot springs just north of Pismo Beach that most visitors walk right past on Highway 101.
For couples looking for a private spa-like experience without booking a treatment, SeaVenture Beach Hotel puts a private outdoor hot tub on the balcony of every single room. I have recommended it to more friends than any other hotel in Pismo Beach. Here is everything worth knowing.
Resort Spas Near Pismo Beach
The Cliffs Resort Spa
Shell Beach, CA · Full-Service Resort Spa · $$$
The Cliffs Resort has the most dramatic spa setting of any property in the area. The hotel sits on a bluff above the Pacific in Shell Beach, and the spa services are offered alongside access to the oceanfront pool deck. The treatment menu covers Swedish massage, deep tissue, hot stone, facials, and couples packages. It is the resort I send friends to when they want a special-occasion spa day and need ocean views to come with it.
Non-hotel guests can book spa treatments by appointment. Call or book online well in advance for weekend visits, particularly May through October when the hotel is at or near capacity. Parking is free for guests and spa visitors.
Dolphin Bay Resort and Spa
Shell Beach, CA · Full-Service Resort Spa · $$$
Dolphin Bay Resort and Spa has the most complete spa program of any property in the Pismo Beach area. The treatment menu includes massage, skin care, body wraps, and couple's packages, supported by a large heated pool and well-maintained spa facilities. The resort itself is all-suite, meaning you can combine a spa day with a spacious suite that has a full kitchen and bluff views over Shell Beach.
Like The Cliffs Resort, Dolphin Bay accepts day visitors for spa treatments by appointment. The spa at Dolphin Bay has a slightly more modern, polished environment than The Cliffs, with a larger indoor spa area. If the choice comes down to these two, choose The Cliffs for the drama of the setting and Dolphin Bay for the quality of the spa environment itself.
Pismo Lighthouse Suites
Pismo Beach, CA · Spa & Pool Amenities · $$
Pismo Lighthouse Suites offers spa amenities at a lower price point than The Cliffs or Dolphin Bay, with a heated pool and wellness facilities in a walkable downtown Pismo Beach location. It is the best choice if you want to combine a city-center location with spa access and do not need a full treatment-room spa program. The all-suite format means comfortable rooms with separate sleeping and living areas.
Avila Hot Springs: The Central Coast's Best-Kept Secret
Avila Hot Springs
Avila Beach, CA · Natural Mineral Hot Springs · $ · 7 minutes from Pismo Beach
Most visitors drive right past Avila Hot Springs on Highway 101 without knowing it exists. This is a mistake. Avila Hot Springs is a natural mineral hot springs resort in Avila Beach, fed by geothermal water that stays at around 104 degrees Fahrenheit in the soaking pool year-round. It is one of the most genuinely unique wellness experiences on the entire California Central Coast, and it is open to the public for a very affordable day-use fee.
The facility has a large outdoor pool fed by the hot springs, a smaller dedicated soaking pool at the full 104 degrees, and basic overnight cabin accommodations for those who want to stay. The setting is relaxed and unpretentious. It is not a luxury resort, it is a natural hot springs facility with decades of history on the Central Coast, and that is exactly what makes it worth visiting.
My recommendation: combine Avila Hot Springs with an overnight at Avila Lighthouse Suites and a morning at Avila Beach for kayaking and the promenade. The combination makes for one of the best full-day wellness and nature experiences within easy reach of Pismo Beach.

Private Ocean-View Hot Tubs: SeaVenture Beach Hotel
If what you actually want is a private hot tub experience without booking a treatment room or a spa package, SeaVenture Beach Hotel is in a category of its own. Every room at SeaVenture comes with a private outdoor balcony and a personal hot tub facing the ocean. You step outside from your room, sink into the hot tub, and look directly at the Pacific. There is no equivalent of this experience anywhere else in the Pismo Beach area.
SeaVenture is beachfront, has an on-site restaurant, and books out well in advance during summer and around holidays. If a romantic, private spa-like experience is the main priority for your trip, this is the hotel. It is not a five-star resort spa, but a hot tub on your private balcony overlooking the Pacific at sunset is an experience that no treatment room can fully replicate.
Avila Lighthouse Suites also offers pool and spa facilities in a warm, sheltered Avila Beach setting for those who want something slightly quieter and more resort-like than downtown Pismo Beach.
SeaVenture Full ReviewSally's Spa Planning Tips
Book resort spa treatments at least a week in advance
The Cliffs Resort and Dolphin Bay both fill their treatment schedules quickly on weekends from May through October. Call or book online as soon as you have your travel dates confirmed.
Non-guests are welcome at both resort spas
You do not need to be a hotel guest to book a spa treatment at The Cliffs Resort or Dolphin Bay. This is not widely known and means you can enjoy the best spa facilities in the area from any hotel in Pismo Beach.
Avila Hot Springs is best on weekday mornings
The soaking pools fill up on summer weekends. A weekday morning visit before 10 a.m. gives you a quieter, more relaxing experience. The facility opens early.
Pair Avila Hot Springs with Avila Beach for a full day
Avila Beach is less than a mile from the hot springs. Kayaking in the morning, lunch on the promenade, and the hot springs in the early afternoon makes for a genuinely excellent full-day wellness itinerary from Pismo Beach.
SeaVenture books out fast around holidays and Valentine's Day
The private balcony hot tubs make SeaVenture the most in-demand romantic hotel in Pismo Beach. If you are planning a couples trip, book SeaVenture 6 to 8 weeks in advance for peak periods.
Bring a light robe or cover for pool-to-building transit
The resort spas and outdoor pools at The Cliffs and Dolphin Bay involve some outdoor movement between facilities. The marine layer keeps coastal temperatures cool even in summer, so a light cover is useful.
The ocean water is too cold for most casual swimmers but that is what the pools are for
Pismo Beach ocean water runs 54 to 62 degrees Fahrenheit year-round. The heated pools at all major hotels and the 104-degree Avila Hot Springs soaking pool are the practical answers to that.
