All three Shell Beach hotels reviewed by a 15-year local. From The Cliffs Resort's oceanfront spa to Spyglass Inn's budget bluff views.
Travel writer and Pismo Beach local expert. Sally has lived in Pismo Beach for over 15 years, personally visiting and reviewing every spot featured on this site. Her recommendations come from real meals, real stays, and real conversations with the locals who make this community run.
Shell Beach is a quiet coastal neighborhood about 3 miles south of downtown Pismo Beach, and it is home to the two best resort properties in the entire area. The bluff setting gives Shell Beach dramatically different views than the flat beach in downtown Pismo, with elevated sightlines over the Pacific that draw couples, honeymooners, and travelers who want dramatic scenery without the summer pier crowds.
There are exactly three hotels in Shell Beach. I have stayed at or visited all of them. Here is what you need to know about each one before you book.
| Hotel | Price | Standout Feature | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Cliffs Resort | $$$ | Full oceanfront bluff resort | Best Overall |
| Dolphin Bay Resort and Spa | $$$ | Full kitchens in every suite | Best for Families |
| Spyglass Inn | $$ | Best value with ocean views | Best Budget Option |
The Cliffs Resort
Shell Beach · $$$The Cliffs Resort is the standout property in Shell Beach and the best hotel in the greater Pismo Beach area for a full resort experience. It occupies a dramatic bluff position with unobstructed Pacific Ocean views from most rooms, a full-service spa with oceanfront treatment rooms, an award-winning restaurant, and a heated oceanview pool that is spectacular at sunset. The hotel's clifftop location puts guests above the noise of the beach itself, with staircase access down to the shoreline. Service is attentive and the property is exceptionally maintained. Book direct for the best rates and ask about ocean-facing rooms on the upper floors for the best sightlines. This is the property you choose when the trip demands something genuinely special.
Dolphin Bay Resort and Spa
Shell Beach · $$$Dolphin Bay Resort and Spa brings a contemporary all-suite format to Shell Beach, making it the strongest choice for families or extended stays where self-catering is important. Every suite comes with a full kitchen, which eliminates multiple restaurant meals per day and significantly reduces the cost of a longer trip. The Lido at Dolphin Bay is a serious restaurant with a locally focused menu and thoughtful wine program. The spa is excellent, the pool is heated year-round, and upper-floor suites have partial ocean views and access to the bluff path. Dolphin Bay is quieter and less resort-branded than The Cliffs, which suits guests who prefer a lower-key atmosphere. The location in Shell Beach puts dining, parks, and tide pools within walking distance.
Spyglass Inn
Shell Beach · $$Spyglass Inn is the most affordable way to stay in Shell Beach, offering genuine coastal views and a heated pool at rates well below the resort properties nearby. The rooms are modest compared to The Cliffs Resort or Dolphin Bay, but the bluff setting gives many rooms ocean sightlines, and the pool deck has excellent views of the Pacific. Spyglass is pet-friendly, which makes it popular with travelers bringing dogs. The hotel sits walking distance from Dinosaur Caves Park, one of Shell Beach's best coastal bluff parks, and the Shell Beach neighborhood restaurants and coffee shops are within easy reach. If your priority is staying in Shell Beach without resort pricing, Spyglass Inn consistently delivers solid value.
Should You Stay in Shell Beach or Pismo Beach?
This is the most common question I get from visitors. Here is an honest breakdown.
| Shell Beach | Pismo Beach | |
|---|---|---|
| Atmosphere | Quiet, residential, bluff views | Active, pier-centered, beach town |
| Best hotels | The Cliffs Resort, Dolphin Bay | SeaCrest, SeaVenture, Sandcastle |
| Dining | 3 to 4 mile drive to main restaurants | Splash Cafe, Ventana Grill, Oyster Loft walkable |
| Ocean access | Bluff stairs down to cove beaches | Wide flat beach, direct sand access |
| Crowds | Significantly less crowded | Busy in summer, especially weekends |
| Price | Resort prices ($$ to $$$) | All price points ($ to $$$) |
| Best for | Romance, couples, resort stays | Families, groups, pier/dining access |
My recommendation: if you want a romantic bluff-view resort experience, stay in Shell Beach. If you want to walk to dinner, the pier, and the beach without a car, stay in downtown Pismo Beach. Either way, the two areas are less than 10 minutes apart.
Sally's Tips for Staying in Shell Beach
- 1. Book The Cliffs Resort for a full resort stay. If you want the spa, the fine dining, the heated bluff pool, and the oceanfront setting all in one place, The Cliffs Resort delivers. Book direct and ask for a higher-floor ocean-view room. The views from the upper rooms are genuinely among the best of any hotel on the Central Coast.
- 2. Dolphin Bay is the smart choice for a longer trip. Full kitchens in every suite mean you can self-cater breakfast and some lunches, which matters a lot on a 4 to 5 night trip. The suite layouts give you real living space rather than a standard hotel room. The Lido restaurant is good enough that you do not have to drive to Pismo for every meal.
- 3. Spyglass Inn is the honest budget play. The rooms are basic, but the bluff location, ocean views, and pool make it worth well above what you pay. It is the only Shell Beach hotel that accepts pets. Book a room facing the ocean for the best value proposition in Shell Beach.
- 4. Plan to have a car. Shell Beach restaurants are more limited than downtown Pismo Beach. If you want Splash Cafe, Ventana Grill, or The Oyster Loft, you are driving a few miles. Budget 10 to 15 minutes for the drive during summer weekends when Highway 101 can slow down.
- 5. Walk to Dinosaur Caves Park. All three Shell Beach hotels are within walking distance of Dinosaur Caves Park, one of the best coastal bluff parks on the Central Coast. The views from the park are excellent, the grounds are free, and the area is one of the better sunset spots in the Pismo Beach area.
- 6. Check off-season rates at the resorts. November through April sees real drops at The Cliffs Resort and Dolphin Bay, sometimes 30 to 40 percent below summer peaks. The spa and restaurant are still fully open. The Monarch Butterfly Grove is active November through February and is only 5 minutes away, making a Shell Beach off-season stay genuinely excellent value.
- 7. Ask about the bluff path. Shell Beach Road has a pedestrian path along the bluff that connects the neighborhood. All three hotels have access to this path, which is one of the nicest coastal walks in the area, with views over the Pacific and access to several cove entry points.
